Russell 'tried something different' in Q3 – without success

George Russell says he attempted a different tyre warm-up procedure on his final run in Q3 in a bid to improve his lap time, but the stratagem unfortunately proved unsuccessful. Russell ended his first qualifying of 2022 ninth in the pecking order and a whopping 1.658s adrift of Red Bull poleman Max Verstappen. The Mercedes driver knew that his car did not have the speed to challenge for pole, with teammate Lewis Hamilton setting only the fifth fastest time in the Saturday evening session in Bahrain.
