Ex-F1 driver warns Drive to Survive contributed to controversial season finale

Former Formula 1 driver John Watson believes the dramatic element that Netflix’s Drive to Survive series has brought to the sport affected the stewards in the closing stages of the 2021 championship. Sir Lewis Hamilton was comfortably leading Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in the dying laps of the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, and team principal of the Milton Keynes-based outfit Christian Horner admitted during the race that his driver needed a “miracle” to claim the title. They got one. Williams’ Nicholas Latifi smashed into the barrier at Turn 14 late in the race, leading to a Safety Car under which Verstappen pitted, leaving five lapped cars between him and Hamilton.
