Russell had dived into the pits to take on the dry tyres at the end of the second formation lap, as well as 18 of the other drivers. With the Williams pit box at the end of the pit lane, Russell wasn't able to get in the queue at the end of the pit lane while waiting for the green light to filter out. Instead, the British driver opted to use the free space in front of him to poke his nose in and, when the light went green, used his momentum to zip past Alpine's Esteban Ocon and into an effective second...
