Michael Schumacher's leg-breaking accident was 22 years ago today

Article To news overview © Formula 1 Michael Schumacher's 1999 title fight with McLaren's Mika Hakkinen came to an abrupt end on this day 22 years ago. The German driver had been fighting for position with Ferrari teammate Eddie Irvine, when Schumacher speared straight on going into Stowe corner. Having seemingly made no attempt to brake or get through the corner, Schumacher's high speed impact with the tyre barrier resulted in him breaking his right leg. He was extricated from the car and brought to hospital, otherwise unharmed. The cause of the crash was explained as a loss of rear brake pressure due to a loose brake bleed nipple.
