FIA explains decision: 'That is why Verstappen was penalised'

Michael Masi still stands one hundred percent behind his decision to award the extra World Championship point for the fastest race lap to Valtteri Bottas. According to the FIA chief, Max Verstappen gained a relatively large advantage by driving off-track at that point in Turn 14. "As per the event notes and following a review of what happened in Friday in particular, Turn 14 was being used far more… it wasn’t an issue in 2020 but became one in 2021,” Masi is quoted by Motorsportweek.com.
