Zanardi airlifted to hospital after handbike accident

Alex Zanardi has been airlifted to hospital in Italy after suffering a serious crash with a heavy vehicle during a national race for Paralympic handbike athletes on Friday. Initial reports offer only minimal details of the accident that occurred near the Tuscan town of Pienza, except that the 53-year-old racer and former F1 driver was alive when transported to a hospital near Siena. ©Wri2 The former Grand Prix driver and two-time CART champion lost both his legs in a horrendous crash at the Lausitzring in 2001.
