Gasly sets target of taking AlphaTauri 'to the top' after signing new deal

The Frenchman is facing a difficult British Grand Prix weekend but has set his sights on taking his AlphaTauri team to the very top after signing a new deal with the team.

With his AlphaTauri team picking up their option on his services until the end of 2023, Pierre Gasly heads into the upcoming British Grand Prix full of confidence that they can be fighting for the best possible finish in the battle to catch Alfa Romeo in the Constructors' Championship. However, currently sitting 11thin the Drivers’ standings, the Frenchman is aware that things may not be as straightforward as they would like them to be this weekend due to the challenges the Silverstone circuit presents. "As for Silverstone this weekend, it’s a circuit I appreciate a lot, it’s very fast and you get an incredible feeling from the car in some sections, particularly Maggotts and Becketts," he said.

Gasly: Our car is lacking aero

"But we will have to see how we get on, because being honest when assessing our car, we know we lack a bit of aero and we can expect to have to deal with a weekend that might not be straightforward for us," he continued. Despite some of their rivals bringing upgrades to this event, Gasly has confirmed that his Faenza-based squad won’t be having any just yet. Despite that, they will be doing everything to get the most of what they have and take advantage of any misfortune that may come their rival’s way. "We will still be doing everything we can to get the most out of the package we have right now, while waiting for some upgrades that will be arriving soon," he said.

Silverstone something of a home race for AlphaTauri

"For now, we must be ready to seize whatever opportunities come our way, even if on paper, Silverstone will be tricky for us," he admitted. "It’s a home race for Red Bull Racing and, in a way, also for us as our aero department and wind tunnel are based not far from the track. "The atmosphere is quite special here and I’m looking forward to an interesting weekend.”

Gasly talks new AlphaTauri contract

New contract extension in hand, Gasly is looking forward to the next 18 months with the team, starting this weekend. He has revealed that his main aim is to help them get to the top, using the way they work together so well for the rest of this year to put them up into the best possible position for a very strong season in 2023. “I’m looking forward to this weekend at Silverstone for many reasons, including the fact I know I can now look ahead to a further 18 months with this team,” he said. “I’m pleased it’s been confirmed early, so we now have time to plan a strategy of how to build and develop next year’s car. “We already know we can perform well together, so I am convinced that if we work well over the rest of this season and develop well, there is no reason why we can’t have an excellent 2023 season."

Frenchman wants AlphaTauri to return to the top

"For me personally, my goal is to help this team get to the top. Compared to when I first came here in 2017, we now have a lot more experience of working together, we all know and understand one another very well across the team, both in Faenza and Bicester," Gasly added. "We work efficiently together, based on our past history and many seasons racing together. "I have big ambitions for myself, and I always give my maximum to get the best results for the team. I will continue to push to get the best ever season this team has had next year."
