Jacques Villeneuve believes that Sebastian Vettel's resurgent form at Aston Martin could cause problems for his teammate, Lance Stroll. After missing the first two races of the season due to testing positive for coronavirus, Vettel had a difficult return in Australia, a race in which he recorded a DNF. However, since the team introduced an upgrade package to the AMR22 at the Spanish Grand Prix, the German has looked to be in good form, and scored his best result of the campaign so far in Azerbaijan when he finished P6. He looked to be on course for a strong weekend at the Canadian Grand Prix after edging towards the top of the timesheets during the practice sessions. This didn't quite follow through in qualifying, with both Aston Martins exiting in Q1, but Vettel worked his way up through the field, and eventually finished P12.
Villeneuve: The difference in quality of drivers will show
Villeneuve thinks that, like fellow World Champion Fernando Alonso, Vettel is proving the value of his experience. "Like Alonso, he's a champion," Villeneuve told the F1 Nation podcast. "He's got a lot of experience and he's working with the team. Now, the car is getting more and more developed towards him." Consequently, Villeneuve expects this to potentially pose an issue for Stroll, who has generally been outperformed by Vettel at recent race weekends and has 10 fewer points in the World Championship standings. "The more this happens [with the team developing the car towards Vettel], the more it will be difficult for Lance to drive that car," the 1997 World Champion said. "The difference in quality of drivers will start to show, and you see that a lot [with] the modern car, the 2022 car. "You see a big difference between drivers, and it looks like, [over] the last few years, it was hiding a lot of the talented drivers."
