Ocon: Alpine can fight Ferrari at Monaco

The Frenchman feels Alpine will be at the sharp end of the midfield at the Monaco GP. Ocon has in good form heading into the fifth round of the 2021 Formula 1 season.

Esteban Ocon believes Alpine can put pressure on Ferrari at Monaco due to Alpine's strong one lap pace in recent events. Ocon has made the final part of qualifying at the last three rounds with a ninth place start in Imola, sixth in Portimao and fifth at the Spanish GP. Alpine have not had the same pace in the race but due to the extra importance of qualifying at Monaco, Ocon reckons the team could have their best result of the season so far. "I think we should be in good shape in Monaco," Ocon told RacingNews365.com and other select members of the press. "I think we are going to be able to perform as good [as in Spain] so I think we can give a fight to Ferrari and the other cars around them in qualifying, I’m pretty confident about that. “The area where we are focused in for Monaco is the race [pace]. But it's hard to overtake so it's less of a critical point. I think we are a bit slower than Ferrari and McLaren at the moment on pure race pace." Ocon is ninth in the drivers' standings whilst Alpine lie in fifth spot in the constructors' championship heading into Monaco.
