Wolff: Schumacher has incredibly large shoes to fill

The Mercedes team principal is convinced that Mick Schumacher will be a driver the top teams will have to watch out for in the future as the German makes his Grand Prix debut on Sunday.

Toto Wolff is expecting "great things" from Haas driver Mick Schumacher as the F2 champion makes his Formula 1 debut this weekend at the Bahrain Grand Prix. Schumacher has been forced to deal with relentless pressure throughout his junior career and will be on the spotlight when he lines up on the starting grid on Sunday. Wolff is confident that Schumacher can meet his expectations and withstand the pressure from the F1 paddock. "Mick, of course, has incredibly large shoes to fill," Wolff told ORF. "His father is the most iconic racing driver F1 has ever had. On the other hand, you don't make it into F1 without talent and performance. "I know Mick personally, he's a pretty decent kid who has an incredibly strong personality and a good character. He is intelligent and I am actually convinced that he can do great things in F1." Schumacher celebrates his 22nd birthday today (Monday) and is looking forward to getting his first race weekend under his belt after a good pre-season test having overcome a gearbox problem which initially limited his track time "Obviously, I’m super excited about the first race in Bahrain," said Schumacher. "Thinking about it, it’s 30 years since my dad started his first race, and now I am starting mine. "The fact that I’m in F1 and away to be racing – it feels so amazing. I’m so happy that I’m finally there, finally able to race with everybody, and to show my potential working with a great team. I will learn and improve as a driver and as a human."
