Sainz suffers broken vertebrae following Dakar crash

Article To news overview © DPPI / Red Bull Content Pool Carlos Sainz Sr has suffered multiple vertebrae fractures following his accident on the Dakar Rally. The two-time World Rally champion suffered a heavy accident early into stage nine of the Dakar, flipping his Audi machine which landed on the nose and then the roof. He was medevaced by helicopter, but after feeling better asked the pilot to turn around and return him to the event - being held in Saudi Arabia. However, the damage sustained was so severe that his car was retired from the event - one he has won four times, in 2008, 2010, 2018 and 2020.
