Fire causes THIRD red flag of Japanese GP practice

What a strange session. Three red flags have caused almost 40 minutes of disruption.

A fire has caused a hat-trick of red flags during FP2 for the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka.

The bizarre incident, reminiscent of the fire at Shanghai last season triggered the red flag only a couple of minutes after the session has resumed for the second time.

It appears that strong winds blew sparks from the bottom of cars onto the grass at Turn 7, igniting it in the process.

Teams will have a matter of minutes to continue their preparations when the session resumes, after the heavily curtailed session which saw Jack Doohan and Fernando Alonso cause the first stoppages.

Combined, at least 36 minutes of the session has been red flagged.
