Red Bull team principal Christian Horner sees the advantages of having three-car teams in F1, but does not think the idea will become real anytime soon...

There seems to be a serious lack of seats available within Formula One nowadays.

The likes of Esteban Ocon, Stoffel Vandoorne, Brendon Hartley and George Russell (to name a few) could be left without a seat for next season.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has already expressed his willingness to add an extra car to each team - where the side would put an extra driver, a driver with less than two year's experience.

However, Horner doesn't think this idea from the Mercedes man is too practical with the lesser midfield teams not having the budget that Mercedes or Red Bull do, for instance.

"It's an interesting one," Horner admitted to Motorsport.com. "But the practicalities of running three-car teams - there are things like pit stops - it's a very complicated thing to do.

"Interesting in concept, but once you get into the practicalities of it, it's very, very complex. I cannot see the midfield being particularly happy with it (the idea)."

Like Horner, McLaren's Zak Brown finds the idea an interesting one - however, he does not see how it would work in reality.

"I like the idea of third cars, but how do you manage that?" Brown asked. "I think there's room on the grid, but not for everyone to have one. Maybe you have them at certain races, but it's got to be equal and fair."
