Sebastian Vettel has won the
Belgian Grand Prix, as the German overtook Lewis Hamilton early doors and never looked back, meaning Vettel now edges closer in the title race.
The race started with a lot of spectacle. Nico Hülkenberg, who started way back on the grid because of a penalty, miscalculated the breaking point at the first turn, and caused some serious carnage. He sent Fernando Alonso flying, as the Spaniard used Charles Leclerc's Sauber as a ramp, and Daniel Ricciardo also got stripped of his rear wing in the process. Ricciardo then hit Kimi Raikkonen, puncturing the Finn's tyre. As Alonso landed on top of Leclerc's cockpit, the Monegasque rookie will be very thankful of the halo being there to protect him. He could've been seriously injured otherwise.
Raikkonen and Ricciardo tried to carry on, but eventually were wheeled into their respective garages later in the race. Five retirees because of one mistake at the start.
Meanwhile, at the front of the grid, Sebastian Vettel made the most of things. He took Lewis Hamilton on the outside and overtook him at T4 in the first lap, only moments before having to slow down for the safety car, which had to be deployed to clean up the mess from the crashes at the start.
Max Verstappen did very well to overtake both Force India cars early on, and he cruised to a podium finish into what basically is his home race, as he was born only an hour away from the track. Another podium for the Dutchman, who has shown consistency in recent months.
Force India have done very well to hang on, with Sergio Perez only giving up P4 to Valtteri Bottas in the last laps. Still, P5 and P6 for the Pink Panthers in what officially was their debut race under the new management. What crisis?
Haas also did a great job at Spa, with the American team gaining massively on Renault as they finished P7 and P8, and no Renault finished within the points. Carlos Sainz only finished in P11 after starting in P14. The battle for midfield is well and truly on now!
Vettel had an absolutely clinical race at Spa Francorchamps, and also broke the Mercedes winning-streak at the legendary track, with the German now gaining seven points on Hamilton again. The gap is now seventeen points, with eight races to go.
However, in the constructors' championship, Mercedes are pulling away slightly from
Ferrari. Raikkonen's retirement hurts the Italian team massively, as Bottas' impressive P4-finish and Hamilton's P2-finish eventually compensate for Vettel's maximum points.
