Bottas and Mercedes send a warning signal down the paddock towards Ferrari, as Bottas sets a fantastic 1:18.148 thrashing anyone else on the grid. His Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton backed him up finishing 2nd after a strong Mercedes FP1. Ferrari could only get within 0.950 seconds of the Silver Arrows. It's certainly the start that the German team were hoping for this weekend.
Under the new front nose, McLaren had a positive session with Alonso finishing 6th fastest getting close to the Red Bull boys. Ricciardo didn't complete the session as he ran wide and ended up in the wall damaging his front wing.
Despite finishing the session behind Mercedes, Ferrari made a good start. Kimi Raikkonen set the fastest opening time and looked good to hold onto it. He went into the pits for a planned floor change and things began to change.
Vettel and Bottas both had a spin almost simultaneously in two different corners. A lot of drivers found it tricky to find full grip with a few drivers taking trips to the gravel.
Bottas went on to impress setting the fastest time of the session. A time which he beat 3 times over.
At the hour mark, Ricciardo ran wide, slid over the top of the gravel and touched the wall. His front wing carried some damage and the incident ended his session. Confirmed by Christian Horner, he is expected to return for this afternoon's session. His team-mate Verstappen held on to finish 4th after setting a fast time late on.
Robert Kubica made his return to the cockpit after an 8-year absence due to a serious injury. He didn't make any improvements to the usual Williams performance in 2018 as both drivers finished last.
