Vandoorne hit with Sochi grid penalty after gearbox change

Stoffel Vandoorne has become the sixth driver to be hit with a grid penalty for Sunday's Russian Grand Prix after the McLaren Formula 1 driver took a gearbox change ahead of the race. Vandoorne finished 19th in qualifying at the Sochi Autodrom on Saturday, but was due to rise up to P14 on the grid as Fernando Alonso, Brendon Hartley, Pierre Gasly, Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo all took power unit penalties. The stewards confirmed in a pre-race bulletin that Vandoorne had taken a fresh gearbox ahead of the race, warranting a five-place grid drop.
