2018 German Grand Prix - Qualifying report Vettel takes German GP pole, Hamilton hit by hydraulic failure Sebastian Vettel will start the 2018 German Grand Prix from pole position after setting a new track record time of 1:11.212s at the Hockenheimring. It's Vettel's 55th career pole, but only the second time the Ferrari driver has claimed the top spot in his home race. Valtteri Bottas will start alongside him on the front row. However his Mercedes team mate Lewis Hamilton suffered a hydraulic failure at the end of Q1 and was able to take no further part in qualifying, meaning he will start from no better than 14th place on Sunday.
