Just one more trail blazed by Dan Gurney

©CahierArchive Dan Gurney was always at the forefront of innovation during his outstanding career, blazing multiple trails in various areas. Among his pioneering initiatives, Gurney was the first F1 driver to use Bell Helmet's radical full-face Star model which would become widely adopted after 1968. In this picture taken by 14-year-old Paul-Henri Cahier, the son of famed photographer Bernard Cahier, Dan is sitting on the grid of the 1968 German Grand Prix at the daunting Nürburgring, waiting to race off into the 14-mile Green Hell in torrential rain.
