Suzuka FP1: Vettel fastest chased by Hamilton

Title contenders Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton topped the timing screens at the end of a busy first free practice session for the Japanese Grand Prix, as teams made the most of the 90 minutes as rain is expected at Suzuka in the afternoon. Vettel, whose Ferrari was severely damaged in a freak collision in Malaysia less than a week ago, showed strong pace as he powered to the top of the timing screens with a best lap of 1:29.166. This was two tenths better than Hamilton could achieve in the Mercedes, and three tenths up on Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo with Kimi Raikkonen four tenths down in fourth – less than half a second covering all four drivers.
