Renault took 'risk' with Hülkenberg gearbox

– Renault Managing Director Cyril Abiteboul has explained that the manufacturer took a "risk" with Nico Hülkenberg's gearbox, the part which caused his retirement in Monaco.Renault struggled for pace through Thursday practice, with Hülkenberg only 17th, but the German qualified 12th and moved up two spots on the grid due to penalties for rivals.Hülkenberg occupied 10th in the opening stint but his gearbox expired, forcing him to park his R.S.17 at Portier, for his first retirement of the campaign.Abiteboul explained that data had shown a "risk" with Hülkenberg's gearbox, but gambled on it lasting, in order to avoid taking a five-place grid penalty."The...
