Tech analysis: Alonso debuts new McLaren front wing

While both McLaren drivers had numerous updates on their MCL32s in Melbourne, Fernando Alonso was the only one to run the new front wing, partially explaining the delta to his teammate Stoffel Vandoorne.  The new front wing's mainplane features a full length slot [1], which makes the entire wing work harder allowing a different angle of attack. This has allowed the designers to reduce the strakes under the wing, down from three to two [2], as they position the airflow as it makes its way around and across the front face of the tyre.
