Ricciardo hoping to fight Mercedes in opening laps

United States Grand Prix – Daniel Ricciardo is hoping to take advantage of starting on the super soft tyres by challenging the Mercedes drivers early on in the race. Red Bull Racing opted to split their strategies in qualifying, with Ricciardo and team-mate Max Verstappen starting the race on different tyre compounds. Rules states that any drivers in the top ten shootout must start the race on the tyres they used to set their time in the second part of qualifying. Ricciardo progressed into Q3 by using the super soft tyres, whilst Verstappen and the two Mercedes drivers all set times on the soft compound tyres.
