Hamilton soars to Malaysian pole position

Malaysian Grand Prix – Lewis Hamilton claimed pole position ahead of team mate Nico Rosberg, nearing ultimate lap record pace with a 1:32.850. Rosberg came under pressure from rivals Ferrari and Red Bull in qualifying but managed to secure a front row start alongside his team mate. With a total of a 45-place grid penalty Fernando Alonso only needed to qualify within the 107% rule, taking the pressure off some of the midfielders in Q1. Esteban Ocon out-qualified team mate Pascal Wehrlein for the first time, although Manor are unsure if they have completely resolved a software issue the German suffered on his engine during FP3.
