McLaren happy with ‘unexpected' top ten pace

Italian Grand Prix – McLaren's Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button were surprised by their top ten performances in Friday's free practice sessions. Since the rebirth of the McLaren-Honda partnership, the team have struggled on circuits which are power unit-intensive, and were not expected to perform particularly well at Spa-Francorchamps or Monza. However, following Alonso's seventh-place finish at the Belgian Grand Prix, McLaren found themselves running in the top ten of the second free practice session for this weekend's Italian Grand Prix, in a session which included several qualifying-style simulations.
