Power unit penalty for Fernando Alonso
Belgian Grand Prix – McLaren's Fernando Alonso will take a 35 place grid penalty ahead of Sunday's race in Belgium. Alonso will join Lewis Hamilton at the back of the grid, having needed to take a completely new power unit ahead of FP2. Alonso had to be sidelined after just a handful of laps in the opening practice session, unable to set a time after his MP4/31 sprung a water leak linked to the ERS system. After investigation, McLaren opted for a complete power unit change. This came after Honda brought a new spec power unit that had already brought Alonso up to his allowed limit of parts for the season.
