Massa's race unravels after first lap collision

German Grand Prix – Williams' Felipe Massa had a race to forget at the Hockenheimring after a small Lap 1 tap damaged his suspension. Massa was tagged by the Renault of Jolyon Palmer while racing into the hairpin on the opening lap of the race, resulting in seemingly small damage to both cars. However, Massa's pace was almost nonexistent afterwards and he rapidly lost positions to the likes of Fernando Alonso, Carlos Sainz & Kevin Magnussen. Struggling through the race and trying to stick to a normal pitstop strategy, Williams were unable to rectify the issue and Massa eventually retired on Lap 36.
