Alonso stays on top as rain hits Silverstone F1 test

Fernando Alonso topped the first day of Formula 1's second in-season test for McLaren, as afternoon rain at Silverstone ensured nobody was able to better his time from the morning session. Spots of rain started to fall just before the resumption of testing at 13:30 local time, which meant few cars ventured out of the pits until the second hour of running. In the end, most teams made at least some use of the wet-weather running, which was briefly interrupted by a red flag when a wooden pole fell from the lighting gantry onto the track along the start/finish straight. That proved to be the only stoppage during an otherwise uneventful day, despite the arrival of more rain in the final hour....
