Rosberg handed grid penalty after FP3 crash
Mercedes has confirmed Nico Rosberg will take a new gearbox ahead of qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix, landing him a five-place grid penalty. The German crashed heavily during FP3 after suffering left rear suspension failure on the Mercedes W07, but while investigations into what caused the issue is ongoing, the team has confirmed a new gearbox will be required. As a result, championship leader Rosberg – who has been quickest in FP1 and FP2 – can start only as high as sixth position, potentially paving the way for team-mate and title rival Lewis Hamilton to claw back ground in the title battle.
