Throwback Thursday: 2002 Austrian Grand Prix
Team politics have always been a contentious facet of Formula One, but the race that shot the debate into mainstream discussion was the 2002 Austrian Grand Prix. A year earlier, Scuderia Ferrari had commanded Rubens Barrichello to allow team-mate Michael Schumacher through for second position on the final straight. Justified as “letting Michael through for the Championship,” the race allowed Schumacher to maintain a slim lead over David Coulthard on the table. The race drew the ridicule of fans, who accused the Maranello outfit of ruining spectacle and fair racing by implementing team orders.
