Mercedes confirms Hamilton will get new engine for race Mercedes confirms defending world champion Lewis Hamilton will receive a new power unit for the Chinese Grand Prix following ERS issues prevent him from setting a time in qualifying. Problems with the Energy Recovery System (ERS) in his Mercedes resulted in the British driver failing to complete a lap and therefore bowing out of qualifying at the Q1 stage. An unscheduled gearbox change meant that the man who is currently second in the drivers’ championship standings was already facing a five-place grid penalty prior to his unexpected elimination.
