Alonso first power unit destroyed; Spaniard facing medical checks in Bahrain

Bahrain Grand Prix – Honda has expressed its' disappointment that McLaren's Fernando Alonso will have to use the second of the allocated five power units this weekend, following his dramatic crash at the season opener. Alonso escaped remarkably unscathed from the accident, involving Haas' Esteban Gutierrez, which pushed his car into a dramatic roll across the gravel at Turn 3 of the Australian track. A new chassis will be needed, such was the damage sustained from the accident. Honda confirmed to FormulaSpy last week that Alonso would be running a new power unit in Bahrain regardless, but remained hopeful of salvaging the original PU for use later in the season.
