Taking place in dreadful weather conditions, the 1989 Australian Grand Prix saw Belgium's Thierry Boutsen claim a second career win in his Williams-Renault. As heavy rain lashed Adelaide’s street circuit, many drivers elected to boycott the event. “There is a difference between being brave and being stupid,” said triple world champion Nelson Piquet. “This is a dangerous sport and it doesn't need to be made any more dangerous”. True to his word, fellow F1 great Alain Prost simply drove back to the pits at the end of the opening lap.
