Fernando Alonso demoted losing out on McLaren double points finish

McLaren Honda enjoyed a double points finish in Sochi this afternoon until Fernando Alonso was summoned to the stewards office shortly after the race. Alonso was handed a five second timed penalty for exceeding track limits at turn 16 in the closing stages of the Russian Grand Prix. Before the penalty was applied, Alonso had finished the race in tenth position, behind team mate Jenson Button and 2.214s ahead of Dutch youngster Max Verstappen. The five second penalty, however small it may be in comparison to other timed penalties handed out, packs a particularly strong punch and sting for Alonso demoting him to 11th, out of the points and letting Button close the points gap between the...
