Sainz Jr conscious, airlifted to hospital after FP3 crash
Carlos Sainz Jr has been airlifted to hospital following a heavy crash in final practice for the Russian Grand Prix, with the FIA confirming he is conscious. The Spaniard lost control of his Toro Rosso on the run to Turn 13 with 20 minutes of FP3 to go. He hit the outside wall and went straight on, with the car becoming burried in the barrier. The session was abandoned while Sainz Jr was removed from the car, giving a thumbs up as he was put into an ambulance and taken to the medical centre. He was then transported to hospital via helicopter. An FIA spokesperson said: 'The driver is conscious, he is OK. He has had a certain impact, he has been extricated, but the guy is OK.
