Closed Cockpits – Are they right for Formula 1?

Since the tragic crash that ultimately cost Jules Bianchi his life at the Japanese Grand Prix last year and the loss of Justin Wilson following flying debris in the IndyCar race this week, closed cockpits have emerged as what many people think may be the solution to better the safety in motorsport. The concept is simple, protection over the driver so their head can’t be hit in a collision or by flying debris, but it’s the execution that causes the problems. First off, how would such protection be implemented? A Fighter-jet style cockpit? A Halo style ring around the driver as Mercedes proposed?
