Rosberg pips Hamilton, Maldonado crashes

Formula One got back to work in predictable fashion in Belgium on Friday with Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado crashing his Lotus while champions Mercedes topped the first practice timesheets after the summer break. Nico Rosberg pipped his championship leading teammate Lewis Hamilton, who has a 21-point lead after 10-of-19 races, by 0.242 seconds. The German's best time of one minute 51.082 seconds around the longest track on the calendar came in bright sunshine that looked set to last despite Spa's reputation for capricious conditions.
