Wehrlein ends opening day on top for Mercedes

Mercedes protégé Pascal Wehrlein posted the fastest time on the first day of the in-season test on a rain affected day at the Red Bull Ring. The German driver set a best time of 1m11.005s during the afternoon in Austria, after a morning of non-action due to heavy rain, with the day’s running extended by two hours due to red flags being shown due to the conditions. Reigning European Formula 3 Champion Esteban Ocon was second quickest for the Sahara Force India team, who were running their b-specification VJM08 for the first time, with their aim to race for the first time at the British Grand Prix in two weeks time.
