Tech Analysis: Williams' intruiging winglet

Williams have run a boldly-designed winglet ahead of the rear tyre during the first day of testing in Austria, so why have we not seen it on any other car before? The winglet – which is mounted to the floor via three supports – features two elements and a pair of individual endplates, placed directly ahead of the rear tyre. The device aims to flick air over the tyre and induce its own downforce, which should reduce drag slightly as well as improve rear grip. With teams struggling to extract anymore from the current regulations, it first seemed as if Williams had stolen a march on the competition by installing this radical new piece of aero.
