Barcelona Day 1: Maldonado puts Lotus back on top

Pastor Maldonado ended day one of Formula 1 testing in Barcelona fastest of all in the Mercedes powered Lotus E23, putting the final nail on a torrid season they endured last year as a Renault powered outfit. After a year in which Lotus topped nothing, Maldonado set the best time of 1:25.011 and racked up 69 laps in the process, to finish ahead of Kimi Raikkonen in the Ferrari who again showed strong pace in the SF15-T who had 73 laps on his chart when the day ended. Daniel Ricciardo was third fastest in the Red Bull RB11, ahead of Sergio Perez at the wheel of last year's Force India – the team having missed out on the Jerez test earlier this month.
