Lewis Hamilton wins BBC Sports Personality of the Year award

Lewis Hamilton has been named the 2014 BBC Sports Personality of the Year, becoming the first Formula 1 driver to win the prestigious award since Damon Hill back in 1996. Hamilton appeared on a shortlist of ten sportsmen and sportswomen for tonight's ceremony in Glasgow, and following a public vote was announced as the winner ahead of golfer Rory McIlroy, the overwhelming favourite on the night, and athlete Jo Pavey.
