Alonso: Old engine made sixth the maximum

Sutton Images Enlarge Fernando Alonso says he may have been able to challenge Daniel Ricciardo for fifth on the grid if not for the decision to avoid a penalty by using an old engine at the United States Grand Prix. While drivers can incur a penalty by using a sixth engine component, they are forced to start in the pits for changing the whole power unit - something Red Bull decided to do with Vettel in Austin. Alonso says Ferrari considered doing that but opted for an older engine in order to keep its least used one in good shape before the double-weighted Abu Dhabi finale, and so the Spaniard did not incur any penalty.
