Background: Low grids are nothing new to F1

– This weekend's United States Grand Prix will feature the fewest entrants in almost a decade of Formula 1 competition, with cash-strapped Marussia and Caterham the inevitable victims of the financial crisis engulfing the sport. Their absence, enforced by administrators, means that only 18 drivers have made the journey to Austin to compete in the 17th round of the season.It also means that for the first time since 2005, there will be fewer than 20 entrants at a Grand Prix. There have been a few anomalous exceptions; in 2009 two races – Hungary and Japan – featured only 19 starters after Felipe Massa and Timo Glock sustained injuries in qualifying which ruled them out of the race....
