Magnussen gets five-place grid penalty

Kevin Magnussen will drop five places on the grid for the Russian Grand Prix as a result of a gearbox change after causing a red flag in FP3. After 18 minutes of the final practice session, Magnussen came to a stop out on track at Sochi, with the red flag being brought out in order to recover the McLaren. Once the car was returned to the garage the team found that it was a gearbox problem that was the cause. With Magnussen having to change gearbox ahead of qualifying, he receives an automatic five-place grid penalty as a result of not having completed six consecutive events with the same gearbox.
