Mercedes planning driver programme to rival Red Bull

+ Mercedes could soon have a junior programme to rival that of Red Bull, but only after this year’s world championships have been wrapped up says F1 team boss executive director Toto Wolff. Mercedes has a fine history of developing young talent and taking them to the very pinnacle of motorsport, with seven-time Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher the German marque’s finest graduate. Yet, in recent years Mercedes has failed to produce a talent equal of its young driver programme of the late 80s, early 90s, which saw racers such as Schumacher, Karl Wendlinger and Heinz-Harald Frentzen all progress to Formula 1.
