Hamilton quickest in Italian GP first practice

Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time in the first practice session for the Italian Grand Prix on Friday shading Mercedes teammate and championship rival Nico Rosberg by eight-tenths of a second. Jenson Button split the two Mercedes drivers in second, well over half a second off Hamilton’s pace while Kevin Magnussen was fifth, a second slower than the top time, but indicated that McLaren could perhaps have its most competitive weekend since the season-opener in Australia. Ferrari was only fourth fastest with Fernando Alonso nearly a second down Hamilton’s times, offering home fans little hope for a podium on Sunday. Kimi Raikkonen was further down in seventh.
