Hamilton sets pace in first Monza session

Mercedes AMG Petronas Lewis Hamilton set a commanding pace during the first practice session for this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix at Monza. Hamilton moved to the front of the pack with 20 minutes of the session remaining and consequently lowered his time to a 1:26.187, over six-tenths of a second faster than nearest rival Jenson Button. Nico Rosberg was third for Mercedes, eight-tenths behind team-mate and title rival Hamilton. Fernando Alonso was the only other driver to get within a second of Hamilton’s time as he placed fourth ahead of Ferrari’s home race.
