Alonso edges Mercedes in Canada first practice
Fernando Alonso held on to the quickest time from favourites Mercedes by a thin margin in the opening practice session for the Canadian Grand Prix on Friday. The Spaniard was just 0.016 seconds faster in his Ferrari than Lewis Hamilton, whose programme focussed on fuel saving in the final ten minutes, and a tenth ahead of championship leader Nico Rosberg, who was in third. Ferrari has reportedly introduced a series of upgrades for the weekend but Alonso had nevertheless played down the team’s hopes after he said that the goal for the season was to secure second place in the constructors’ championship.
