FP1: Alonso pips Mercedes duo to quickest time
Fernando Alonso was the quickest man during a dry opening practice session for the 2014 Canadian Grand Prix. The Ferrari driver's 1:17.238 was only 0.016 quicker than Lewis Hamilton who looked set to go quicker with a purple sector one and two, but backed out after a small error. Hamilton settled for second whilst team-mate Nico Rosberg was a further tenth back in third. The gap to Sebastian Vettel in fourth was almost nine tenths, with everyone from fifth onwards over a second back. The session was relatively uneventful, with only Jules Bianchi making contact with the close Canadian walls. His Marussia limped back to the pits with broken suspension.
