New yellow flag rules put drivers under spotlight

Under new guidelines set out by the FIA in 2014, drivers will be under greater surveillance in yellow flag situations thanks to a more detailed sector review system. The track will now be split into 20 sectors as opposed to the previous three to assess whether a driver has undercut his best sector time by 0.2 seconds. This would increase to 0.5 seconds in the case of double-waved yellows. The new system would eliminate issues such as Suzuka when Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello, Force India’s Adrian Sutil, Renault’s Fernando Alonso and Toro Rosso’s Sebastien Buemi were all hit with five place grid penalties for not slowing adequately for yellows during qualifying. “It will give...
