Alonso tops first practice, Hamilton's Mercedes breaks down

Fernando Alonso was the first driver out on track this season and ended with the quickest time in the first practice session for the Australian Grand Prix on Friday while favourite Lewis Hamilton’s run ended early. Alonso set a time of 1 minute 31.840 seconds around the Albert Park circuit, about half a second quicker than the McLaren of Jenson Button, suggesting Ferrari may have come up with a competitive car in Melbourne. Pre-season testing indicated that Mercedes was on top of the new regulations, which include V6 engines entwined with energy recovery systems, but the factory team suffered a blow in its first Grand Prix outing.
